Swan.my.id, Jakarta - The IHSG short-term outlook is drawing attention as investors prepare for the latest MSCI index rebalancing. The changes will take effect at the close of trading on August 31, 2026.

IHSG Short-Term Outlook Faces MSCI Rebalancing Pressure

Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) conducted its August 2026 index review and announced several changes involving Indonesian stocks. The adjustments are expected to influence trading activity, particularly in stocks removed from MSCI indexes.

In the latest review, GOTO and CPIN will leave the Global Standard category. Meanwhile, nine stocks will be removed from the Small Cap category. They are ARTO, BUKA, ESSA, FILM, HEAL, KPIG, RATU, SMGR, and TCPI.

IHSG Short-Term Outlook Ahead of MSCI Rebalancing

Financial Educator Manager at Sucor Sekuritas Hendry Wijaya said most of the MSCI rebalancing impact has already been reflected in market prices. The August review was announced on August 13 without a major negative surprise.

According to Hendry, the market had previously received confirmation about MSCI's special treatment for Indonesia. The policy included a freeze on the Foreign Inclusion Factor and Number of Shares.

As a result, the remaining market impact is mainly related to technical execution. Passive investment funds are expected to adjust their portfolios on the effective date.

"The remaining factor is the technical execution of passive funds on the effective date," Hendry said.

He expects trading volume and volatility to increase approaching the end of August. The most significant activity could occur around the final trading session before the rebalancing becomes effective.

Stocks removed from MSCI indexes could face potential outflows from passive funds. At the same time, some stocks in the LQ45 or Standard categories could receive relatively higher weightings.

Technical Levels Remain Important for Investors

Despite the upcoming rebalancing, Hendry said the IHSG remains in a positive medium-term trend. He viewed the recent decline as a healthy correction rather than a signal that the broader trend had changed.

Hendry projects IHSG support at around 6,377 to 6,255. Meanwhile, resistance and potential upside targets are seen between 6,623 and 6,730.

The medium-term bullish structure remains intact as long as the index holds its current support area. Therefore, investors are expected to pay close attention to price movements around those levels.

Equity Research Analyst at Kiwoom Sekuritas Indonesia Abdul Azis Setyo Wibowo also expects volatility ahead of the MSCI rebalancing.

He sees the IHSG moving sideways with a volatile tendency. Investors may position their portfolios before the changes take effect.

In addition, changes in foreign fund flows could increase volatility in stocks directly affected by the index adjustments. Therefore, market movements could become sharper near the closing session.

Global and Domestic Sentiment Could Move the Market

Apart from MSCI, several domestic factors could influence the IHSG short-term outlook. One of them is the fit and proper test for Bank Indonesia Governor candidate Destry Damayanti.

The process took place on August 26 and 27. Market participants responded positively to the prospect of clearer leadership at Indonesia's central bank.

The rupiah strengthened to around Rp17,670 per US dollar from Rp17,705 previously. However, the currency remains vulnerable to movements within the Rp17,670-Rp17,712 range.

The psychological level of Rp17,700 could also become an important reference for investors. Movements in the rupiah can influence foreign investor sentiment and capital flows into Indonesian assets.

Meanwhile, international markets are watching United States inflation data, particularly the Personal Consumption Expenditures index. Investors are also assessing signals on US interest-rate policy following the Jackson Hole symposium.

These developments are important because expectations for US interest rates can influence capital flows toward emerging markets, including Indonesia.

On the positive side, a rebound on Wall Street led by technology stocks, lower oil prices, and a rally in the bond market could provide support for domestic sentiment.

Demonstrations Become Another Short-Term Risk

A planned demonstration on August 27 is another factor being monitored by investors. Hendry said its direct impact on the IHSG could remain limited if the protest proceeds peacefully.

The issues raised by protesters mainly concern political and legislative matters. These include discussions surrounding the Asset Forfeiture Bill and punishment for corruption.

Because the issues are not directly focused on economic or fiscal policy, Hendry considers the potential market impact relatively limited.

However, unexpected escalation remains a risk. If clashes occur, investors could quickly shift toward safer assets and trigger profit-taking.

Abdul Azis also considers large-scale demonstrations a short-term risk. Prolonged political uncertainty could weaken investor confidence and slow foreign inflows.

Therefore, market participants are likely to monitor developments closely while maintaining defensive positions.

Commodity and Energy Stocks Attract Attention

Hendry said the main market theme this week is rotation toward commodity and energy stocks. The basic materials sector has remained one of the most consistent sectors showing gains.

This rotation comes as investors adopt a defensive approach ahead of the MSCI rebalancing. Commodity-related stocks could therefore remain attractive if market momentum continues.

Several names that investors may monitor include:

  • AMMN
  • PSAB
  • BRMS
  • INET
  • BUMI
  • PTRO
  • PGEO
  • TINS

However, investors should consider the different risks associated with each stock. Short-term movements can be highly sensitive to foreign fund flows and broader market sentiment.

Azis also highlighted banking stocks. He recommended BBCA with a target price of Rp8,075 and BMRI with a target price of Rp5,400.

Market Direction After the Rebalancing

The market could experience a different dynamic once the MSCI changes become effective. Hendry expects technical pressure from the rebalancing to ease after September 1.

After that, broader macroeconomic fundamentals are likely to regain influence over the IHSG.

This means investors may shift their focus from index-related flows toward interest rates, inflation, currency movements, corporate earnings, and global economic conditions.

For the short term, however, the final trading session of August remains important. Investors should prepare for higher volume and sharper price movements, especially in stocks directly affected by the MSCI changes.

Overall, the IHSG short-term outlook remains cautiously positive. The medium-term bullish structure has not been broken, but volatility could increase before the rebalancing takes effect.

Investors should therefore distinguish between temporary technical pressure and changes in the underlying market trend. Once the MSCI adjustment is completed, the direction of the Indonesian stock market will likely depend more heavily on fundamental and macroeconomic developments.
