Swan.my.id - Jakarta, the BYD Sealion 8 Indonesia story has gained attention after a heavily camouflaged large SUV appeared during road testing in Depok. BYD Indonesia has not announced the model’s launch schedule or specifications for the local market.
The test vehicle could be the BYD Sealion 8, a large SUV that forms part of BYD’s newer global lineup. In China, the model carries the name Sealion 08 and belongs to the Ocean Series. BYD has also presented the Sealion 08 alongside the Seal 08 and Ocean-V concept in its global activities.
Automotive observers noticed similarities between the Indonesian test unit and the Sealion 8 sold in international markets. However, the camouflage still hides important exterior details. The appearance therefore indicates testing activity, not a confirmed local launch.
Regulatory Records Point to Several Possible Variants
Indonesian regulatory data lists three vehicle codes that may relate to the model. The codes are SRE-AWD-30, SRE-RWD-10, and SRE-RWD-20. These records have added to speculation about the possible drivetrain choices for the Indonesian market.
The same data records a Nilai Jual Kendaraan Bermotor, or NJKB, ranging from Rp259 million to Rp272 million. That figure does not represent the consumer selling price. Instead, NJKB serves as one basis for calculating vehicle taxes.
BYD Indonesia has not confirmed which variants will enter the country. The company also has not announced the local price, battery capacity, driving range, seating layout, or launch date.
Large Dimensions and Five- or Six-Seat Layout
In its home market, the Sealion 08 measures 5,115 millimeters long, 1,999 millimeters wide, and 1,800 millimeters tall. Its wheelbase reaches 3,030 millimeters. BYD offers the SUV with seating for five or six occupants.
The exterior follows the Ocean Series design language. Key elements include split headlights, semi-concealed door handles, and a rear light bar that stretches across the tailgate. These features match the visual identity of BYD’s electrified SUV family.
The global model comes with battery electric vehicle, or BEV, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, or PHEV, options in several markets. The PHEV version combines a gasoline engine with electric motors, while the BEV relies on a battery as its main energy source. BYD has yet to confirm the powertrain for Indonesia.
Global Technology Still Awaits Local Confirmation
BYD offers several technologies for the global Sealion 08. Available equipment can include the dual-chamber DiSus-A air suspension and rear-wheel steering. The DiPilot driver assistance system also forms part of the technology package offered for the model.
Nevertheless, prospective buyers should not treat those features as standard equipment for Indonesia. BYD Indonesia has not released an official local specification sheet. The final equipment list could depend on the variant and market strategy.
If BYD brings the SUV to Indonesia, the Sealion 8 could expand the choice of large electrified vehicles. Its size and available seating configurations may appeal to users who need a roomier cabin. Even so, the vehicle currently remains under testing, and its market position will depend on the official announcement.
For now, the camouflaged unit provides an early indication of BYD’s possible plans. Buyers will need to wait for BYD Indonesia to confirm the variant, powertrain, features, price, and launch schedule.
