Emergency Funds Should Come Before Digital Asset Investing

Swan.my.id | Jakarta - Emergency funds should be one of the first financial priorities before people begin investing in digital assets. The principle is simple: investment money should not be money needed for everyday survival.

Emergency Funds Should Come Before Digital Asset Investing

The issue has become increasingly relevant as digital assets gain wider attention in Indonesia. OJK reported 22.69 million consumer accounts among digital financial asset traders as of June 2026. Crypto transactions reached Rp28.58 trillion during the same month.

However, growing participation does not remove investment risks. Crypto prices can move sharply in either direction. Therefore, investors need a financial buffer before allocating money to assets with significant market volatility.

Why Emergency Funds Matter Before Digital Asset Investing

Emergency funds serve as a financial safety net for unexpected expenses. These can include job loss, medical needs, urgent repairs, family expenses, or other situations that require immediate cash.

Without adequate savings, investors may have to sell their digital assets when an emergency occurs. The problem becomes more serious when the market is falling.

For example, Bitcoin or another crypto asset may lose a significant portion of its value during a market downturn. An investor who urgently needs cash cannot always wait for prices to recover.

As a result, selling during a decline can turn a temporary market loss into a permanent financial loss. Emergency funds can reduce that pressure by providing another source of accessible cash.

The separation between emergency savings and investment capital also improves financial discipline. Investors can make decisions based on their strategy rather than immediate financial pressure.

OJK has also emphasized the importance of understanding risks and conducting research before investing in crypto assets. Its 2026 financial literacy campaign encouraged the public to approach crypto transactions carefully and responsibly.

How Much Emergency Funds Should You Have?

There is no single emergency fund target that fits everyone. The appropriate amount depends on income stability, monthly expenses, family responsibilities, debt, and lifestyle.

A common starting point is three to six months of essential expenses. People with unstable income may need a larger financial buffer.

For example, consider someone with essential monthly expenses of Rp5 million. A three-month emergency fund would equal Rp15 million. A six-month target would reach Rp30 million.

The target could be higher for freelancers, business owners, or people supporting several family members. Someone with significant monthly debt payments may also need additional protection.

Emergency savings should also remain accessible. The main purpose is liquidity, not maximum investment returns.

Suitable characteristics include:

  • Easy access when an emergency occurs.
  • Relatively stable value.
  • Separate from daily spending money.
  • Low exposure to market volatility.
  • Sufficient liquidity for urgent needs.

For that reason, emergency money generally should not be placed in highly volatile assets. Digital assets and other market-based investments can fluctuate significantly.

The Risks of Investing Without an Emergency Fund

Investing without sufficient cash reserves can create several financial problems. The first is forced selling.

Suppose an investor puts most available savings into crypto. A few weeks later, an unexpected expense appears. If there is no emergency fund, selling the investment may become unavoidable.

This situation can be especially damaging during a market correction. The investor may sell below the original purchase price simply because cash is urgently needed.

Another risk is taking on debt. Instead of selling an investment, some people may borrow money to cover unexpected expenses. However, this can create additional financial pressure.

High-interest debt can also reduce future investment capacity. Monthly income that could have supported savings or long-term investments must instead cover debt obligations.

There is also an emotional dimension. Financial pressure can influence investment decisions.

An investor who depends on market gains to pay essential expenses may become more likely to panic. They may sell too quickly, chase rising prices, or make decisions based on fear.

Therefore, financial security and investment strategy should work together. A strong investment plan cannot fully compensate for weak cash-flow management.

Build Emergency Funds Step by Step

Not everyone can immediately save six months of expenses. Fortunately, building an emergency fund can happen gradually.

The first step is to calculate essential monthly spending. Focus on expenses that remain necessary even when income changes.

These can include housing, food, transportation, utilities, insurance, debt payments, and basic family needs.

Next, establish a realistic monthly savings target. The amount does not have to be large at the beginning.

Consistency is often more important than the initial amount. A small contribution made every month can gradually create meaningful financial protection.

Practical steps include:

  • Calculate your essential monthly expenses.
  • Set an initial emergency fund target.
  • Open a separate account for emergency savings.
  • Automate monthly transfers when possible.
  • Avoid using the fund for non-essential purchases.
  • Review the target after major life changes.
  • Rebuild the fund after using it for an emergency.

Meanwhile, people who already have investments should not automatically stop investing. Instead, they can balance both objectives according to their financial capacity.

For example, someone without emergency savings may prioritize building cash reserves first. Once the basic safety net is established, they can gradually increase their investment allocation.

Digital Asset Investing Requires Risk Awareness

Digital assets have become an important part of Indonesia's financial ecosystem. OJK's latest data shows continued growth in consumer accounts and transaction activity.

At the same time, regulators continue strengthening oversight of the sector. OJK took over the regulation and supervision of digital financial assets, including crypto assets, from Bappebti after the transition period ended in January 2026.

OJK also published an updated Digital Financial Assets and Crypto Assets handbook in August 2026. The publication covers the ecosystem, regulation, risks, consumer protection, and developments in the industry.

The expanding regulatory framework does not mean digital assets are risk-free. Investors still need to understand price volatility, market conditions, platform risks, and potential scams.

OJK's consumer protection task force reported stopping 228 illegal digital financial asset traders between January and May 2026. It urged consumers to verify licensing, check whether crypto assets are included in the official list, avoid unrealistic offers, and understand the risks before investing.

Because of that, financial preparation should come before chasing market opportunities. Investors need both knowledge and sufficient financial capacity.

Emergency Funds Create More Investment Flexibility

A healthy financial foundation can change how investors respond to market volatility. When basic living expenses are already protected, temporary price declines become easier to manage.

This does not guarantee investment profits. Instead, it provides greater flexibility and reduces the need to make rushed decisions.

Emergency funds also help investors maintain a longer-term perspective. They can evaluate market conditions without immediately worrying about their next month's living expenses.

However, the fund should be reviewed regularly. Income changes, marriage, children, new debt, or career changes can affect the appropriate savings target.

The same principle applies after using the fund. Once an emergency has passed, rebuilding the reserve should become a priority before increasing investment risk again.

A Strong Financial Foundation Comes First

Digital asset investing can offer opportunities, but it should not come at the expense of basic financial security. Emergency funds provide the buffer needed to separate short-term financial needs from long-term investment goals.

For many beginners, the first investment decision should therefore not be which crypto asset to buy. It should be determining whether they can afford to invest at all.

Building three to six months of essential expenses can provide a practical starting point. From there, investors can gradually develop a portfolio that matches their income, objectives, and risk tolerance.

Ultimately, successful investing is not only about finding assets with growth potential. It is also about having enough financial resilience to stay invested through difficult periods.

With an emergency fund in place, digital asset investing can become part of a broader financial plan rather than a substitute for financial security. The goal is not simply to seek higher returns, but to build a strategy that remains sustainable when markets and personal circumstances change.
