Tesla Begins Austin Robotaxi Service With Steering-Free Cybercab

Swan.my.id - Jakarta, Tesla has officially launched its new Tesla robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, using the Cybercab, a vehicle designed to operate without a steering wheel or pedals.
The launch places Tesla among companies offering fully autonomous vehicles without physical driving controls to consumers in the United States. However, the service currently operates only within a restricted, geofenced area around Austin.
Tesla introduced the Cybercab prototype in October 2024. The commercial launch follows the start of production at the company’s Texas Gigafactory earlier this year, marking a new stage in Tesla’s autonomous vehicle strategy.
Tesla Robotaxi Service Starts With Limited Coverage
The initial operation remains limited as Tesla begins testing the service in real-world conditions. The geofenced model allows the company to control where the Cybercab operates while it develops the service for broader use.
The Cybercab is designed to carry two passengers. It also includes luggage space at the rear, although the vehicle does not have a front storage compartment, commonly known as a frunk.
Its exterior features butterfly doors that open upward. The doors use an automatic opening and closing mechanism, adding to the vehicle’s distinct design.
Cybercab Cabin Focuses on Digital Controls
Inside the cabin, the Cybercab features a large central touchscreen. The display provides trip information and allows passengers to control various vehicle functions during their journey.
Passengers can also access digital entertainment content through the system provided inside the vehicle. Because the Cybercab has no steering wheel or pedals, the cabin is designed around passenger use rather than manual driving.
This configuration reflects Tesla’s approach to autonomous transportation, where the vehicle handles driving duties while occupants monitor their trip and use the available digital features.
Tesla Targets Lower-Cost Robotaxis
In the longer term, Tesla aims to sell the Cybercab for less than USD 30,000 per unit. The company expects this price target could allow private owners to join its robotaxi network in the future.
That plan would expand the service beyond vehicles operated directly within Tesla’s initial network. Private Cybercab owners could potentially contribute their vehicles to the company’s wider robotaxi operation.
For now, Tesla’s priority remains the Austin rollout and its limited operating area. The service’s next development will depend on how the Cybercab performs as Tesla gradually builds its autonomous transportation network.
What Is the Cybercab?
- The Cybercab is an autonomous vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals.
- It is designed to carry two passengers.
- It has rear luggage space but no front storage compartment.
- It uses upward-opening butterfly doors with automatic operation.
- A large central touchscreen provides trip information, vehicle controls, and digital entertainment.
With its Austin launch, Tesla has moved the Cybercab from prototype development into limited commercial operation. The company’s longer-term goal is to make the vehicle available to private owners and connect it to a broader robotaxi network.
