Chinese Automakers Expand Their Manufacturing Footprint in Indonesia

Swan.my.id - Jakarta, Chinese automakers produced 87,319 vehicles in Indonesia from January to August 2026, accounting for around 10.16 percent of the country’s total four-wheel vehicle production. The figures show that several brands are building a local manufacturing presence, rather than relying solely on vehicle sales.

Data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) put national four-wheel vehicle output at 859,256 units during the same eight-month period. That total rose 13.4 percent from 757,432 units in January-August 2025.

Twelve Chinese brands contributed to the reported local production figure. Their output came through a mix of company-owned manufacturing facilities and assembly arrangements with local partners.

Chinese automakers Indonesia: BYD leads local output

BYD recorded the highest production among the Chinese brands, with 24,877 units. That volume also placed the company eighth among Indonesia’s largest vehicle producers through August 2026.

The company’s local output coincides with the operation of its manufacturing facility in Subang, West Java. The plant has an annual production capacity of up to 150,000 units, while its investment has been reported at Rp 16 trillion.

Jaecoo ranked second, producing 23,021 units through assembly at PT Handal Indonesia Motor (HIM). Wuling followed with 12,630 units. Unlike Jaecoo, Wuling operates its own manufacturing facility in Cikarang, West Java.

Local assembly supports more Chinese brands

HIM’s assembly facilities also serve several other Chinese brands: Geely, Chery, Xpeng, Jetour, iCar, and Aletra. Meanwhile, GWM conducts vehicle assembly through its facility in Wanaherang, West Java.

The reported production figures for the 12 brands are:

  • BYD: 24,877 units
  • Jaecoo: 23,021 units
  • Wuling: 12,630 units
  • Geely: 10,665 units
  • Chery: 9,438 units
  • Xpeng: 2,452 units
  • Jetour: 2,383 units
  • DFSK: 744 units
  • iCar: 550 units
  • Aletra: 460 units
  • GWM: 69 units
  • Farizon: 30 units

The list shows a wide range of production volumes. BYD and Jaecoo together accounted for a large share of the 87,319-unit total, while several other brands reported output below 1,000 units.

A growing manufacturing role

The figures highlight how Chinese brands are becoming part of Indonesia’s automotive manufacturing chain. Some have established their own facilities, while others use local assembly partners. The data does not identify the production arrangement for every brand in the 12-name list.

As more brands produce vehicles locally, their contribution to the national automotive industry could grow. That presence may develop through investment in manufacturing facilities or continued cooperation with local assembly companies.

For now, the January-August 2026 data offers a snapshot of that expanding role: Chinese brands contributed about one-tenth of national four-wheel vehicle output, while overall production also increased compared with the same period a year earlier.
