Swan.my.id - The MSCI review of Indonesia’s stock market helped set off a historic sell-off on Friday, October 16, when the Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) fell 11.57% to 5,185.10. Investors are now watching how regulators respond and what MSCI decides, while weighing ways to manage exposure to volatile markets.
The decline was the IHSG’s steepest daily fall since 1998. Of the shares traded, 812 fell and just 11 rose, with total transaction value reaching Rp26.4 trillion. Foreign investors recorded net sales of Rp3.34 trillion that day, while the rupiah weakened 0.45% to Rp18,005 per US dollar.
Why the MSCI review of Indonesia’s stock market matters
MSCI, a global index provider, has opened a consultation on whether to lower Indonesia’s market classification from emerging market to standalone market. A standalone market is assessed separately and does not form part of broad global benchmarks such as the MSCI Emerging Markets Index.
MSCI has raised concerns about share-ownership transparency, suspected coordinated trading and whether market rules have been enforced effectively. The review does not mean a change has already been made. MSCI is accepting feedback through April 30, 2027, and expects to make a final decision by June 30, 2027.
The classification matters because some investment funds track global indexes. If Indonesia loses its emerging-market status, those funds may reduce or remove Indonesian shares from their portfolios, potentially adding pressure to prices. However, the outcome remains uncertain while the consultation continues.
The sell-off spread across all 11 market sectors. Major bank shares BBCA, BBRI and BMRI each fell about 14.8%, while an estimated Rp1,141 trillion in market value disappeared in one day, according to Investortrust. Foreign investors’ net selling had reached Rp88.19 trillion since the start of the year.
Other international moves offered context but did not match the scale of the Jakarta decline. The Nasdaq fell 2.1% as chip shares weakened, while Brent crude rose 3.72% after an attack on a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. The sharp difference in magnitude put the MSCI review at the center of local market concerns.
What investors should watch next
The Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) was scheduled to seek clarification from MSCI on Monday, October 19. Investors will also be watching for responses from the exchange and the Financial Services Authority (OJK), as well as any further detail on the concerns behind the consultation.
Several wider market indicators may influence sentiment too. On October 16, the rupiah stood at Rp18,005 per US dollar, and the yield on 10-year Indonesian government bonds was 7.169%, down from 7.237% a week earlier. The US 10-year Treasury yield was 5.098%, while CME FedWatch put the likelihood of a Federal Reserve rate increase at its October 28 meeting at 16.1%.
Brent crude settled at US$109.86 a barrel after its daily rise, adding another factor for markets to monitor. Meanwhile, the global gold price was US$4,165.50 an ounce, down 0.13% on the day. These figures can change quickly, and movements in currencies, interest rates and commodities may affect local investment prices.
Options to consider amid market volatility
Investors seeking a more predictable income stream may look at SBR015, a government retail savings bond offered until October 22, 2026. Its two-year series, SBR015T2, has a minimum annual coupon of 6.75%; the four-year SBR015T4 has a minimum of 6.85%, according to the Directorate General of Budget Financing and Risk Management at the Ministry of Finance.
SBR015 may suit people who can hold the investment for its stated tenor and understand its terms. It is not a substitute for cash that an investor may need immediately. Before investing, buyers should review the product conditions and consider how long they can set the money aside.
Money market mutual funds invest in short-term instruments and are generally designed to provide relatively easy access to invested funds. They may be worth reviewing for short-term savings, but their value and returns are not guaranteed. Reported one-year returns as of October 16 were 5.24% for Setiabudi Dana Pasar Uang and 4.79% for Avrist Ada Kas Mutiara. Past performance does not predict future results.
Fixed-income mutual funds can also be considered gradually by investors who accept price fluctuations. Their net asset values can change as bond yields move. The reported one-year returns were 5.87% for Syailendra Sharia Fixed Income A and 5.34% for Trimegah Dana Obligasi Nusantara, based on figures as of October 16. Those historical results do not guarantee future performance.
Gold remains another option some long-term investors use to diversify. Still, it is not immune to losses: the global price had fallen 4.86% since September 18, as well as slipping on October 16. For those who choose to invest, buying in smaller, regular amounts can spread out purchase timing, though it cannot remove market risk.
Quoted digital gold prices on the morning of October 19 were Rp2,471,598 per gram at Treasury, Rp2,453,000 at Pegadaian and Rp2,421,588 at Indogold. Prices vary across providers and can change. Investors should check current prices, fees and terms before making a transaction.
Balance liquidity, risk and investment goals
The review creates uncertainty, but it does not by itself determine what any individual investor should buy or sell. A standalone-market decision could prompt further foreign outflows, while rupiah weakness, high oil prices and elevated US bond yields also present risks. Mutual funds with share exposure and gold can lose value, just as fixed-income funds can fluctuate when yields change.
Investors may want to first assess their time horizon, need for liquid funds and tolerance for losses. SBR015 and money market funds offer different characteristics from fixed-income funds or gold, so they should not be treated as interchangeable. Diversification and gradual investment may help manage timing, but neither guarantees returns or protects against every loss.
For now, the key dates are the SBR015 offer’s close on October 22, the Federal Reserve meeting on October 27–28, 2026, and MSCI’s final decision deadline of June 30, 2027. Until then, market conditions and official updates may shift. Investment decisions should reflect personal circumstances, and investors should review relevant product documents before committing funds.
